Ingredients, Chosen With Intention
At Butterhouse, ingredients are not an afterthought — they are the starting point.
We believe good food begins long before it reaches the oven. Every Butterhouse recipe is built on ingredients chosen with care—not for efficiency or shelf life, but for integrity, flavor, and simplicity.
Every recipe begins with a simple question: Would we keep this ingredient in our own kitchen?
If the answer isn’t an easy yes, it doesn’t make it into our cookies.
We choose ingredients for their flavor, integrity, and how they’re grown — prioritizing organic sourcing when it matters most and working with traditional methods when they produce something truly special. We bake in small batches so we can stay selective, not industrial.
We avoid ultra-processed ingredients, artificial additives, and lab-engineered shortcuts. If an ingredient doesn’t belong in a home kitchen, it doesn’t belong in ours.
This is what we mean by The Butterhouse Standard.
How We Choose What’s Organic
We follow guidance from the Environmental Working Group, particularly their Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists, which identify produce most and least likely to carry pesticide residue.
When an ingredient appears on the Dirty Dozen, we choose organic whenever possible. For ingredients with naturally lower residue risk, we focus on quality, sourcing, and flavor.
This approach allows us to be thoughtful and responsible — without adding ingredients that don’t meaningfully improve the final cookie.
What You’ll Never Find in Our Cookies
We believe good baking doesn’t need shortcuts.
Our cookies are made without:
- Artificial or “natural” flavors
- Artificial preservatives
- Artificial colors or dyes
- Hydrogenated oils
- High-fructose corn syrup
- Genetically modified ingredients
If an ingredient can’t be explained simply, it doesn’t belong here.

These form the structure of our cookies. We start here, choosing ingredients that bring flavor, texture, and integrity before anything else is added.
Sweeteners

Each sweetener is chosen for a specific role — from structure and caramel notes to natural sweetness in fillings. Nothing is used by default.

We use whole fruit and fresh zest for brightness and balance, allowing natural variation in flavor and texture rather than forcing uniformity.
